Overview

PEPTIVA OXYTOCIN ACETATE is the acetate salt of oxytocin, a nine-amino-acid cyclic peptide, supplied as 10mg lyophilised powder in a sealed research vial.

What it is. Oxytocin is a hormone produced in the hypothalamus and released from the posterior pituitary. Its structure was determined and it was first synthesised by Vincent du Vigneaud in 1953 — the first peptide hormone ever made in a laboratory.

What research investigates. Oxytocin acts at the oxytocin receptor (a G-protein-coupled receptor) on uterine and mammary tissue and in the brain. It is one of the most studied peptides in neuroscience, with published work on social behaviour, stress responses and receptor pharmacology in animal models and in human studies of intranasal pharmaceutical formulations. A pharmaceutical form of oxytocin is an approved medicine in obstetrics; this research material is not that product and carries no approval.

How to read this evidence. Findings described above come from laboratory and animal studies unless stated otherwise. Preclinical results do not establish effects in humans. No claim of benefit, efficacy or safety in humans is made for this material, which is supplied strictly for laboratory and in-vitro research — not for human or animal use.

Research overview
  • Endogenous nine-amino-acid hormone; first peptide hormone synthesised in a laboratory (du Vigneaud, 1953)
  • Acts at the oxytocin receptor; extensively studied in neuroscience and reproductive physiology
  • A separate pharmaceutical form is an approved obstetric medicine — this research material is not
  • Research use only — not for human or animal use
